Block retaining walls in the Sutherland Shire
Updated October 2026
When a wall has a serious job to do, holding a driveway, carrying a boundary cut or terracing a steep Shire block in one go, block is often what the engineer draws. Block retaining walls in the Sutherland Shire come in two main flavours: core-filled Besser block walls on a concrete footing, and interlocking segmental block systems like Link Block or AB that stack without mortar. We connect you with experienced, insured local builders who build both.
Besser block walls
A Besser block wall is reinforced masonry. A concrete footing goes in first, steel starter bars come up out of it, hollow blocks are laid around the steel and the cores are filled with concrete. Finished walls can be rendered, painted, clad in stone or left bare. Built to an engineer's design, this is as strong as domestic retaining gets, which is why it is the common answer for tall cuts, driveway edges and anything carrying a surcharge load like a car or a structure above.
Interlocking block walls
Segmental systems stack purpose-made concrete blocks that lock together and lean back slightly into the slope. No mortar, no core fill, and for garden-height walls often no concrete footing, just a compacted road-base pad. They are quick to build, drain well through their open structure, and curve around gardens nicely. Taller interlocking walls use geogrid layers tied back into the soil, which needs engineering and more excavation.
The Shire factor
Shire blocks throw everything at a wall: steep falls, sandstone shelf that changes footing plans mid-dig, clay pockets common around Menai and Bangor that swell and shove, and bush-edge runoff in the southern suburbs. Block walls handle all of it if they are built with proper drainage. Every block wall quote from the builders we refer should include ag-pipe at the base, free draining gravel backfill and weep holes or an outlet, because trapped water is what cracks and tips block walls, not the soil itself. More on that at retaining wall drainage.
Guide pricing
As a rough 2026 guide, block retaining walls in Australia typically run around $300 to $750 per metre for a wall about a metre high, with core-filled Besser work at the upper end and some sources quoting engineered masonry at $500 or more per square metre of wall face. Guide pricing only. Footings, steel, core fill, rock excavation and engineering move the price more than the blocks do. The retaining wall cost guide breaks down what moves a quote up or down.
Approvals, engineering and licensing
In NSW, walls up to 600mm high can be built without approval if they meet the exempt development criteria. Anything over 600mm needs a CDC or DA, and walls much over a metre usually need an engineer's design. Walls carrying a surcharge such as a driveway, pool or building, or walls close to a boundary or structure, generally need engineering whatever their height. Block walls are often at the taller, structural end, so expect engineering and a complying development certificate or DA to be part of the conversation. Confirm the rules for your site with Sutherland Shire Council. Before any digging, your builder should lodge a free Before You Dig Australia (BYDA) enquiry to locate underground services.
NSW requires residential building work over $5,000 including GST to be done by a licensed contractor, which covers almost every block wall. The builders we refer are licensed where the work requires it.
How the referral works
Shire Retaining Walls is a referral service. You tell us what the wall needs to do, we pass the job to an experienced, insured local builder who works your suburb, and they call you back with a free quote. No obligation, and you deal with them directly. If a lighter wall might do the job, compare concrete sleeper walls and timber retaining walls first.
Frequently asked questions
Besser block or interlocking block, which should I choose?
Besser for structural jobs: tall cuts, driveways, loads above the wall. Interlocking for garden terracing where speed, cost and looks matter. The builder quoting your job will usually make the call quickly once they see the site.
Do block retaining walls need a concrete footing?
Core-filled Besser walls always do. Low interlocking walls often sit on a compacted road-base pad instead, which is part of why they cost less at garden height.
Do I need council approval for a block retaining wall?
In NSW, walls up to 600mm high can be built without approval if they meet the exempt development criteria. Anything over 600mm needs a CDC or DA, and engineering is commonly required above a metre. Block walls are often tall enough to need both, so check with Sutherland Shire Council early.
Can a block wall be built against sandstone?
Yes, and it is common in the Shire. Rock can even reduce footing depth, though cutting into it adds excavation cost. Builders who work here price rock realistically rather than hitting you with a surprise later.
